The very first meal

IMG_1487

It’s important, don’t you think? A bit like the last meal, not in quite the same way, obviously. Unfortunately it wasn’t like we had many options; our clothes were nearly 24 hours old and our brains thought it was 3.30am. We weren’t going to be having any culinary experiences.

Except that we did. Brooklyn is oh-so-lucky to have a Shake Shack, widely considered to be the best burgers in New York City . Once you eat here, you’ll never be able to enjoy another fast food burger ever again. Each one freshly prepared to order made with 100% all-natural angus beef. So, so good.

We may have eaten a greasy burger for our first meal in NYC but, oh, what a burger.

Six months ago

IMG_1474

This unflattering self portrait was taken on the Heathrow Express six months ago; we were totally exhausted and it shows. The process of leaving had been taking place for months at this point and now we were a few hours away from boarding a flight to start life in our new home city.

Six months later the apartment is unpacked, we’re making friends and getting to know our neighbourhood and wider NYC. Even so, we’re still adjusting, still settling and still having to complete paperwork associated with our immigrant status.

Over the next month I’ll cover some how-to information; lessons I’ve learned that might be useful if you make a similar move. Also some of the places and spaces that have become our locals and favourites.

Thinking about everyone in Boston today. Wishing you well from NYC.

Welcoming Don Draper et al.

Life’s always a bit better when there’s a new season of Mad Men on, isn’t it? I think so, anyway. Knowing that Madison Avenue is a subway ride from our sofa definitely gives it new depth. It’s great to see the show embracing yet another new era though, what’s with all the HAIR?!

While we all celebrated by topping up the bourbon supplies (just Paul, then?), Shutterstock have gone one better by considering how the tools used by those who worked at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce might have developed in the last 50 years; “choosing an everyday symbol from their daily lives and transforming it through a 21-century lens”.

Shutterstock Mad Men

Having been completely obsessed with legal pads since we moved to the USA this is my standout image. Take a look at the rest; Roger Sterling and a smoothie?!

Are you a fellow Mad Men fan? What are your hopes for Don and Megan, Betty, Roger, Joan and Pete this season?

Dreaming of warmer weather

Sailing trip

Spring is in the air this week and it might be time to start believing that Winter may finally be over. Months of negative temperatures, bitter winds, wearing six layers and a down coat gets you thinking, and dreaming, about how great it will be to head out with just a sweater for company.

On one of the last warm days last year, and just after we moved to NYC, Paul and I took a trip on the Hudson River in a 105-foot, 1800s-style, schooner. We left Chelsea Piers just before the sun started to set and by the time we reached Ellis Island the sky was inky and Lady Liberty shone out brightly. The Classic Harbor Line sails several vessels around Manhattan’s skyline; they provide drinks and a blanket, and you bring any snacks you’d like for the journey. Certainly, you get a fantastic view from the Statten Island Ferry, or even the Ikea water taxi, but this experience is just utterly enchanting.

The new roommate song

Ever needed to look for a new roommate? Did you put an ad on Gumtree or Craigslit and hope the for best? This guy did, and went one step further…

Here’s his original listing which is still live so who knows whether the video helped, or hindered? For the record, I love it.

I wrote about our search for a new apartment in Brooklyn and will be updating how that all went, soon.
